I am the senior steward of Elvet Methodist Chruch in Durhan City, during some renovations we came across a sign showing that our church was used as an army recruting office during the war. The whole of the back of the church was used for this and we also found out some more interesting facts from some of the older members of out congregation.
When the sirens went the church steward had to interupt the preacher and pronounce the benedition before leading the congregation to the shelter.
We also had records of who blacked out the church, the change in service times due to the blackout and the names of those who did the work.
It's hard to imagine now our church in sheer blackness and the fear that those who sat in the cellar during an air raid must have felt - but we must give thanks and remember those who did not see peace so we have the right to worship as we choose.
