After the fall of France we were all geared for possible invasion, and I suppose the Isle of Wight was considered in the front line. As a result a concrete road block suddenly appeared outside our front gate. Why, I don't know. Our house was in a semi-detached row with longish front gardens separated by wire fences. We all had privet hedges on the road frontage, and any armoured vehicle could easily have broken through one hedge and by-passed the roadblock through the front gardens. Two soldiers usually stood guard on the roadblock, and I remember that on one evening, and that evening only, they were issued with Molotov Cocktails (bottles of petrol with a fuse attached, first used by the Finns). There had obviously been some form of alarm, but we never heard any more about it, although there were rumours later that an attempt had been thwarted by fire.
