Pilot Officer George Edward Andrews W.O./A.G. RAFVR. was a wireless operator, air gunner in the R.A.F. which he joined some months before the outbreak of World War II. Sunday 3rd September, the day Britain declared war on Germany, George was one of the first to drop leaflets over Germany. In November 1942 he was on a pathfinding mission when his plane was shot down over Hamburg near to where he is now buried. After being posted missing for two and a half years he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal. The official citation states :
"This officer took part in many sorties, including raids on Le Creusot, Genoa and Milan. He was an exceptionally fine wireless operator and an invaluable member of his aircraft crew.
