I use to amaze my Mother much later with my memory of the air raids when I was about 18 months and over, probably because of the frightening of the events, the air raid sirens is a noise I will never forget and the running down to the shelter or the basement of the Nursery,There were not many children in East
London during the War so when my Mother entered me for a Babies Competion there was very few Babies so I won the prize .I was always being made a fuss of by Soldiers on leave, patted on the head wink at and given sweets . I sometimes wondered later how many of them returned home . Being that I was born on the 4 of November my Father told me that the Bombs going off were Fireworks , I lived under some of the worst raids that London had in an area that was heavily bombed. I remember one raid when the bombers came in very low , there was no warning it was daytime and my mother took fright and panicked, she struggled to get the gassmask on my head ,looking up at her I could see the fear in her eyes and behind her through the window the waves of bombers
