My name's Jean Cridge. I was 75 at Christmas 2005. I was born in 1930.
I was just a child during the war. We lived in Todmorden. My father had been the caretaker at my school. You鈥檇 climb over our wall, and you鈥檇 be in the school yard. So when the sirens went, quite a few of the children came over to our house.
We had gas masks too. I wasn鈥檛 actually scared, I think there was too much going on. And, as I say, I wasn鈥檛 very old.
I think everybody was worried, and upset, hoping that nothing happened, with my dad being away, and waiting week after week for a letter to come, you know. He was in the forces, in the Royal Engineers. I don鈥檛 know where he went, he was all over the place. And mum was very worried about him. There was just the two of us living at home, but he wasn鈥檛 away very long.
