It started June 13th 1941, when I joined the RAF and went to Padgate. July 20th 1941 RAF Melksham for a Bomb Armourer course. September '41 61 Squadron RAF Woolfox in Lincolnshire with Manchesters and Lancasters. February '42 RAF Melksham for a gun armourers course. April 1942 to 24OTU RAF Honeybourne, Worcester.
May 1943 I volunteered to join the 3210 Service Commando Unit at RAF Zeals. From May to August at Zeals we concentrated on military training with army units. In August 1943 we drove in convey to the combined operations centre at Inverary for two weeks combined operations course. August 1943 C Flight from 3210 was posted to RAF Friston Eastbourne to work with a Belgian Squadron of Spitfires.
April 1944 the Unit was brought together again at RAF Hawkinge. May 1944 we moved to Bognor Regis into a field - under canvas. Then moved to Old Sarum where our lorries were waterproofed. June 5th 1944 left Old Sarum for Fareham. June 6th, left Fareham at 03.30 hours for Gosport and embarked at 09.00 on an LCT. June 7th 04.30 off the French coast landed 09.30 near Graye-sur-Mer. From June 9th to July 31st we serviced aircraft at the following airstrips; St Croix-sur-Mer, Beny-sur-Mer, St Gabriel, Martragney and Ellon.
Shelling, bombing, snipers and attacks by FW 190's whilst working at Ranville ( a glider landing area). I was also at St Pierre-du-Monde
in the American sector, moving crashed Spitfires.
July 31st our Unit returned to UK from Arromanches. On arrival in UK RAF Thruxton near Andover working on spitfires with them until December 1944 when we moved up to a transit camp at Liverpool. December 12th embarked on Johann Van Oldenbarnevelt - a Dutch liner and sailed on 21st from Liverpool arrived Port Said on December 29th. December 30th went through the Suez Canal. January 4th 1945 arrived in Aden. January 10th arrived Colombo - WAAFS all disembarked and on January 13th arrived in Bombay at a transit camp called Worli. February 3rd took the train to Calcutta and arrived February 7th. February, March and April working on aircraft at Calcutta repair and salvage unit. May 1st in transit to Armada Road approximately 120 miles from Calcutta. Here we were given new lorries and kit and new tools where necessary ready for the invasion of Malaya. Some work on Spitfires and American Thunderbolts. June 10th two weeks hill leave at Shillong which is in Assam. June 15th retunred to Calcutta until VJ Day August 5th.
September 8th embarked on SS Dunera for Malaya where we had three weeks R&R at Kuala Lumpur!
October 2nd left for Port Dixon. October 8th embarked for Batavia Java. 13th Arrived for Peace keeping duties and went down to Soerabaya
for simalar duties until 321 unit was disbanded on January 25th 1946. Afterwards I was posted to SHQ Soerabaya until June 3rd when I was posted to 155 Squadron at Medan, Sumatra. That lasted until August 13th when I embarked on the Monarch of Bermuda for UK and Demobilisation.
