My father's cousin, Jack Mantle, was one of the few 'other ranks' VC's of WW2. He kept firing the gun aboard his ship whilst under attack, despite having had his leg blown off. I have a copy of a beautiful letter written to his mother by a fellow soldier who witnessed Jack's act of bravery, and death. His name appeared briefly in the list of VC's in Jeremy Clarkson's programme tonight.
