My Mother Joyce Audrey Chell joined the RAF at the outbreak of the war, she was based at Ringway Airport in Manchester and in London.
She was a Clerk working in the section that controlled supplies and worked closely with the flying crews.
Until recently she had the wings that belonged to her boyfriend at the time, he was unfortunately killed, we think he was a bomber pilot. She returned these to the RAF just prior to her death.
Later on in the war Joyce was involved with the Hollerith machines that were used during this period, in particular I think she was involved in those that controlled the supplies. She would talk about the cards used in these machines and the responsibilities for ensuring accuracy etc. Joyce was on her final leave after the war when she meets Stanley Goodwin, Stan was convalescing in Blackpool after early plastic surgery. Stan was a mining engineer who had been in the explosion at Silverdale colliery.
