This is one of the stories collected on the 25th October 2003 at the CSV's Make a Difference Day held at 大象传媒 Manchester. The story was typed and entered on to the site by a CSV volunteer with kind permission.
The story is told by A.J.Smith .
I volunteered for VFOP voluntary friends for older people, and have been visiting Mary (91yrs)for 4 years.Weve often talked about evevnts during the war and the story below has haunted her all these years.-A J Smith.
Mary and her husband had travelled home from scotland and had arrived at Picadilly station in the early hours of the morning by train. There had been a heavy air raid in Manchester and they had to make there way to Greengate bus station.Fires were burning along market street-debris everywhere. As they turned towards the bus station there was a tank of stagnant water,a young cat had fallen into the water and was desperatly trying to get out,but the iron tank had no surface for the cats claws to hold on to.They cound`nt reach the cat,but looked around for some wood or plank that maybe could rescue the cat.Nobody was about, there was nothing they could do.They had to walk away-and that quilty feeling still remains with mary after all these years.
