Prior to the war, I was a blood donor. I worked as a Manager of an Engineering company, next door to the hospital, where I regularly donated blood.
During the War, after a particulary heavy raid, the Matron of the Hospital, rang through to me to ask if I could attend urgently to supply some blood as I was an usual blood group which was needed for an emergency operation.
I obviously attended at once and went to the ward, which was full of casualties.
The Matron and I approached one elderly lady who was occupying one of the wards beds.
She looked at me and asked Matron who I was, to which Matron replied "this is John, he has come to donate some blood to enable you to have your emergency operation this afternoon"
The elderly woman beckoned me closer and in a strong Cockney accent, said "IS IT FRESH?!!!"
Turning to the Matron she said " you can't be too careful these days, can you?"!
On relating this story to my work colleagues, the saying "You can't be too careful, John!" stayed with me throughout the rest of the War years!
