on the 8th Sept 1939. children were evacuated from vulnerable densley populated areas of Middlesbrough to avoid predicted bombing. The 'Evacuable Zone' contained 29 schools and strected from the Greyhound Track easterly to Cargo Fleet. The children had learned a well practised routine and 2,900 arrived early in the morning at the Railway Station with labels of identification and listed articles including a gas mask.
The 'Evacuees' were recieved at such places as Bridlington, Malton, Helmsley, Pickering and Scarborough. On arrival each gave their hostess a package containing 1 tin 'Bully Beef', 2 packets of bsicuits, 1 targe tin of Nestle's milk, 1 tin of Ideal milk and 2 packets of chocolate. The allowance for each child was 9 shillings a week to cover board, lodging and medicial attention. Parents paid this in most cases but their resources were often stretchedby having to provide extra strong shoes and warm clothing necessary for winter in rural areas.
