The first day of the war was very memorable for me as I had a brother born that day. At the time, I was 6 years old and living in Kent.

I remember the ARP Wardens blowing whistles as they walked around the fields to announce the outbreak of war.

During the war, my home was badly damaged by a time bomb. Part of the ceiling fell down through the floor and into the cellar below. The priorities were sorted out. Being the lightest, I was sent across the damaged floor to the sideboard on the other side of the room to rescue the tea and sugar!!
