During June, two to three days prior to D-Day, whist still at school I went to help my mother at the British Restaurant near Gravesend West railway station. The Head Cook had received instructions to prepare a hot meal for about 300 troops.
I knew they were combined forces troops from their insignia. They were only five or six years older than me. Overnight they were camped on a piece of land adjacent to the restaurant, near the railway station.
The next day they had gone.
