I hated leaving home. In 1940 I was evacuated with my sister from Banstead in Surrey to Ramsbury, Wiltshire. My aunt gave our food rations to her three children, and I came back suffering from TB. In 1944 I was re-evacuated to Aldershot, which I also hated, and suffered from a crop of boils due to poor food. A doodlebug hit my parents’ home during the war and the ceilings came down.
