I lived in Ashford until 1943 and was evacuated to Oxford at the start of war. Not sure when we moved back. I remember standing on top of an air raid shelter watching the German bombers fly over and dog fights in the sky.On 23 march 1943 I was still in Beacer Road boys school when it was bombed there were about 6 of us in the little office at the front by the playground the rest had managed to get to the shelters especially the girls who had to walk down the road to another school' sheler. Amazingly, not one child was injured.
My father worked for Carter Paterson and he had his yard with horses by the Pub by the old Tank He had a narrow escape as he was sheltering in the outside gents toilet when a bomb hit the side of the pub bounced on the ground under a tin roof through the brick wall bounced off a shelter in the grounds behind and exploded in the bakery with loss of lives
