I joined as a Sapper in the Royal Engineers in 1939 and came out as a Major in 1946. During the war I went to North Africa, Italy, Germany and the Middle East.
When I landed at Salerno, I had to drive through tomatoes growing on the ground and grapevines overhead. A very elderly lady came up, stopped the jeep and poured into it a mixture of tomatoes, grapes and strawberries. She wanted to give us something and that was all she could offer
- and this has really stuck with me ever since. A very moving experience....
