This story was submitted to the People’s War site by Deena Campbell from CSV Action Desk on behalf of Bryan Palser and has been added to the site with his permission. Mr Palser fully understands the site’s terms and conditions.

September 6th 1945 was to be my first day at Grammar School. It was also the day of the first allocation of bananas after the war. My mother took me to the bus, I stood in the queue and she stood in the greengrocers queue for bananas — If she got the bananas before the bus came then I could have one. I got my banana and was the envy of my classmates. For some while after bananas were shared between the family. Those were the days!
