We had been harvesting and haymaking. We had another Land Army girl with us who was called Little Pat and she lived with us. She had to go down to Navigation Lane to pick up a horse from a field down there. Nell and I had to bike up to Pelham鈥檚 Pillar to collect two hay rakes and two horses and take them to Croxby. The hay rakes were as wide as the road was and we had to meet Little Pat at the Fleece Inn with the horse. We met up and set off and we had our stuff loaded up. Nell rode the horse but when we came to Boggle hill she said 鈥 I don鈥檛 fancy riding down this鈥 so Little Pat said 鈥業鈥檒l ride and you lead the horse鈥, so eventually we got down the hill. We had another hay rake to collect and went to Rothwell before we went back to Croxby. We had no shafts so we had to tie them on with binding, etc. When we got to the top of a hill, on a bit of level, we saw George Foreman, the pot man from Caistor, was coming along in his lorry and he pulled right onto the grass verge and got out and stood beside it. He took his cap off as we passed. We said 鈥淲hat鈥檚 the matter George?鈥 and he said 鈥淥h by gum, I was going to cheer. It looked like Barnum & Bailey鈥檚 circus coming!鈥
When we got the hay rakes to Croxby and got them into the field we had to ride them till 10 o鈥檆lock at night and then we had to bike all the way back home to Caistor.
