This story was submitted to the People's War site by a volunteer (Rachel Irven) from Three Counties Action on behalf of Derek Robinson, and has been added to the site with his permission. Derek Robinson fully understands the site's terms and conditions'

When I returned to Ealing after being evacuated to Cornwall for some time, I wanted to go and visit my best friend, Malcolm Davies. My mother told me that I could not, as sadly he had been killed. He had been living with his family in a flat over Abernethies Store (a Department store) in Uxbridge Road, and the store had been hit by a doodlebug and burned down. At the same time a lot of the girls who worked in the store had been sheltering in the basement and were also killed.
