Betty from York Road remembers as a child going out to Rathcoole to live with her grandmother. Her grandmother lived in a British Legion house and was very close to the fields. She says that Rathcoole was very much out in the country in those days before and during the war.
Her uncle and friends dug out their own air-raid shelter in a field beside her grandmother's house. They were friendly with the farmer who gave them permission. They picked a spot under some bushes to dig this shelter. A small stream ran close by.
An uncle who had been made disabled designed a water-wheel which they operated by water from the stream. A brother of the disabled man made and set up the water-wheel and they generated enough electricity to light up this underground air-raid shelter. There was also a chimney and they could enjoy the benefits of a fire.
