During the period when we were having our sleep broken practically every night, my parents invited the Lear families to share their house at Tavistock, an offer which was gratefully accepted. Some of the younger adults among us agreed to share the chore of fire watching at the Plymouth family residences at the top of Torr Lane.
Edgar Lear and I were on watch one night after a week of heavy raids, and it being 'quiet' had decided to get some sleep. We had been in bed for about an hour when there was an almightly bang.
A delayed explosion bomb had erupted near what was then Farley's Rusk factory at the junction of Torr Road and Torr Lane. I yelled to Edgar to get under the bed and he dived one side while I dived under the other. A piece of masonry or shrapnel landed on the bed after penetrating the roof and ceiling.
