Just before the war we lived in Blackley near Manchester very near the A. V. Roe plane and munitions factory. My father was a cabinet maker and was drafted into the army when war was declared in 1939 as he was not classed as essential occupation. My mother was left with 3 young children aged from 9 to 2years and she got a job as a milk delivery lady driving an electric milk float. Eventually I was evacuated to Blackpool with my elder sister. I don't think that the lady who took us in liked us very much. She was childless but I remember her husband having a pet toad in his greenhouse that followed him around. We were not in Blackpool for long and soon moved back to Blackley where we seemed to spend our time in the Anderson Shelter because of the frequent raids. My Mother became ill and my father came home AWOL. He spent about 2 hours at home before the Military Police came and took him away. I don't think I saw him again until after D-Day
