It was just after 8pm on the evening of Feb 13 1941.....the wireless was playing "I!ll Walk beside you"......i was in a double bed next 2 my brother .....when there was this awful bang and the windows and walls caved in ......my brother and i were lucky in that our father had built a wooden canopy over our bed ......and that kept all the rubble off of us .....i was laying in glass from the shattered windows. my father got us out and we went to my grandmothers house in Queens park.
There was not even and Air Raid on at the time ........and over the years many theories have raged, of how or what actually happenend ........whatever it was killed over 80 people ...devastated 3 streets and injured more than 500. it was on the radio later that lord haw haw apologised and said it was a Land Mine dropped without a parachute and was really meant 4 the nearby fighter base at HENDON
I Have lots of newspaper cuttings of this event which anyone interested is welcome 2 see .
It has now transpired that it was a caused by a german experimental rocket.assisted and fired from a german airplane.
