I was born in early 1941 in the Midlands between Birmingham and Coventry where both cities were badly bombed. There were three of us in my grandmothers bungalow, grandma (Nan), my mother and me. There was also an Airedale dog called Bob. My mother told me later that they had to have him put to sleep because they couldn't get enough food for him. Apparently he used to sit at the gate with me in the pram on guard. My first memories of the war were sitting in the pantry when bombs were coming a nd the sound of the siren warning. My mother had to do Fire Watching duties, and we had blackout curtains, and if anyone had a chink of light showing they had to be told about it and make sure no lights were showing. I was looked after by Nan whilst my mother did these duties. My father came from Coventry but didn't live with us and my mother said when it was so badly bombed, only relatives were allowed into the city. I can remember playing in our shed with gas masks provided for us and the ration books were beige for adults and blue for children.
