I recount this story on behalf of my mother Jose Kent(nee Bird)

The following incident took place in the early 1940's in a small village near Ipswich Suffolk.

My aunt and uncle lived in an old house and she was drying her hair beside the fire, when suddenly there was a dreadful noise and the house shook.
They threw themselves onto the floor and waited for what was to come. Nothing happened, so they carefully got to their feet only to find they were lying next to a hole in the floor.

Apparently a British shell had come inland, came in through the wall just above my aunts head, continued down between her back and the back of the chair, took the arm off the chair and buried itself in the floor.
Had my aunt been sitting back in the chair it would have been a far differnt story.

Message 1 - Near Miss Ipswich

Posted on: 06 October 2004 by Ipswich Museum

We have been approached at the Museum by a member of the family, and given some further details to this story.

The House hit by the sheel was at Wherstead, near Ipswich. The misssle came through the house just at the moment when the lady was bent over combing her hair. She received some burns but was probably saved by the comb!
