I could never understand why my country needed me at the age of 19 in the year of 1943. I was less than 5ft 2 and about 7 stone wet through. Joining up was quite an experience ‘cause for one thing I never realised so many girls were born in 1923 — all shapes and sizes from up and down the country. We seemed to grow up overnight. I had ups and downs and sadness but one thing was always with you — true friendship, which in my case still exists. I was proud to wear my blue uniform (W.A.A.F) now WRAF for sure your number was printed on your brain and your heart — never ever forgotten.
