Food was difficult but we were lucky in getting a small country bungalow to ret which had many fruit trees and bushes in its large garden and plenty of land to grow food. Unfortunately it was damp bunhgalow, fairly newly built and the wood for the floors had been requisitioned so that we just had cement floors. There was no main sewer in the village, and people relied on "the spout" as it was known for water, a spring which had been running for many years. The village school had no sanitation or water supply and children had to go to the spout with a bucket to get water for drinking. There was no washing of hands of course. It was no wonder that suddenly everyone in the village turned bright yellow with jaundice as the water supply was contaminated. It was not surpising that no teachers stayed for more than half a term.
