During the war I was a schoolgirl in Wisbech and I truly remember feeling hungry. My sister and I would buy a loaf of bread and go and sit by the canal and eat it. When I got married in the early fifties and moved to the country ( three miles away from Wisbech to Gorefield) things were still rationed. However, I couldn't believe how much better off for food country people were and, I discovered, had been during the war. I remember my mother-in-law telling me that she couldn't sleep at night because there was so much sugar in the house. They used to put it in the airing cupboard to ensure it stayed dry. they grew vegetables, kept pigs and chickens and the farming people used to get together and can surplus stocks of fruit and tomatoes in the village hall. they were still doing this when I got married. I couldn't believe my eyes and to this day I still have that canning machine at home.
