I lived at Glencraig, Co,Down during WW2 with my parents Edward and Elizabeth Caves and my brother Ronald. I remember the American soldiers marching past our house, which was the schoolhouse attached to Glencraig school, going down to the army camp at Seahill, which was also a Prisoner of War camp.At the rear of our house there was a wooded area and many times we were aware of German soldiers who had escaped from the Seahill camp. For a young lad this was a bit scary but they were soon captured. Also remember getting candy from the yanks, couldn't understand that word for sweets but we still enjoyed the candy and chewing gum. Our house was the only one with a telephone in the neighbourhood so many telephone calls were made by the yanks to their local girlfriends. One soldier was a very good pianist and many a time he played 'In the Mood' in our sitting room.
