My brother, sister and I were evacuated to a small village called Newbuildings, 12 miles from Exeter, Devon. We would see the sear lights (for planes) over Exeter and heard the bombs every evening. One night we saw huge flames in the sky. We realised that Exeter had been badly hit and we heard about it on the radio in the morning. They miraculously avoided some of the churches and the cathedral was saved. We were devastated because we Aunt Mary and Uncle Max living in Paris Street, Exeter. We later found out they'd survived.
