My dad was called Bill Garvey, who was on leave as a seaman during the war. We went down Hedon Road in Hull to visit the Sportsman Pub for a pint or three. The previous night there had been heavy bombing in the area and dad arrived to find the whole front of the pub missing, being completely demolished the night before. However, the bar was still standing and the stools remained in tact. Men were stood at the bar drinking as usual.
My dad was an Irishman who said 'I take my hat off to the English' as the Landlord of the pub had put a note up reading 'Open...Business as Usual'
