This happened in 1944.
It was early in the morning, a Lancaster bomber which had bombs on it, the plane was on fire and they were trying to land on the playing fields on Littleton road but they didn’t make it and it hit the bank, the plane blow up and everyone was killed.
The plane was flying that low it took all the chimneys off the houses from Franklin st to whit lane. It also blew all the windows out and cracked all the walls in the back bedroom.
We were in bed and heard the plane going over, my mum was in a neighbours house and ran home to us but the front door was jammed and she had to climb through the window it get to us.
The story has been told in a book and a play at the Lowry called ‘s for sugar’. The navigator on the plane was a Salford boy and where the plane crashed it left a big crater and the lads mother used to come every Sunday to lay flowers at the sight.
