I remember going into the air raid shelters at six at night and coming out at seven in the morning. Four times I came out to find a pile of rubble. This happened between 1941 and 1943. We had to move, but it didn't take long as we didn't have anything. I didn't have a banana till 1954! We had to move schools each time too.
Our family consisted of my Mum, Dad, and brother and sister. My Dad didn't go to war because he was in a reserved occupation. He worked at the docks.
I wasn't really old enough to appreciate what was happening, but I do remember a German plane coming over head, machine gunning. I was absolutely terrified. He must have been a bad shot though, because he missed.
