In August 1939, I was entering 4th year at Hyndland Senior Secondary School and my younger brother was still at Dowanhill Primary School.
In the days before the outbreak of war we had to report every day to Dowanhill School, complete with gas mask and identity labels, ready to be evacuated, the rumours went to Aberdeenshire.
This thought upset my parents very much, so as mum had a brother in Thornliebank, on the Southside of Glasgow, he offered to take us in — Thornliebank was considered a bit safer than Partick!
We enrolled in Thornliebank Primary School and Williamwood High School, but as the war was very calm, we were back home in Partick before Christmas.
Hyndland School was operating on a homework basis, you went to the School once or twice a week to collect and deliver homework, but like a lot of senior pupils I did not enjoy this, so left quite soon. Sometimes wonder how my life would have changed had I stuck in!
