I left school in November 1942 and obtained employment in a Bank in Burton on Trent an I stayed there until I was called up in June 1945 and joined the Army.
After my initial training of 8 weeks, I was transferred to the Royal Engineers and after 4 weeks induction I was posted to Movement Control Bristol Channel Ports. Their Headquarters were located in Newport.
I moved round all the ports in the area an after a year doing that I took over as chief Clerk of the Operations section in Newport.
We were given an allowance by the Army and found our own lodgings for our accommodation.
I was, I think very fortunate because I stayed with a couple who had no children of their own, and they basically treated me as a member of the family. I made friends there and still keep in touch with some of them.
