As my father-in-law Alf Williams, was unable to serve in the forces during the war because of his TB history, he remained working as a clerk for Bristol Corporation. He volunteered to do fire watch duties one night a week with a group of men who worked as decorators, builders etc. for the Corporation. On quiet nights they played card games before going to sleep in the depot. Alf said he was never called out once when it was his turn for night duty but he learned to play whist and Poker very well!
