I was a teenager during the war and living in Edgware Middlesex. I used to go to school by bus. It was a long journey — about three quarters of an hour. I remember the bus stopping. We had to take cover underneath the seats, because a plane was going overhead. I also remember going under the desks at school to take cover. I thought it was scary at the time.
On VE Day I was with my father and we went to central London for the celebrations — fireworks, parades etc. I remember walking back to Edgware from Tottenham Court Road because there was no transport. It was quite a walk! That’s why I remember it so well. I remember that walk more clearly than the celebrations.
