As I was only ten years old in 1939 my memory is not terribly clear. I do remember coming out of an air raid shelter when the all clear siren had sounded and found an enormous crater filled with water, sited in the middle of a crossroad. Lots of people gathered round the crater, I bent down and picked up a big lump of shrapnel. As I did so I received a clip round the back of my head and a police man said drop it and leave it there.
