Later that morning I walked to school past the remains of the joinery works and found that it (my school) was in a "near miss" situation from another bomb. Beyond the gymnasium chemistry lab.block was a small storage yard, separated by a six foot brick wall from the garden of a doctor's house. There appeared to be some damage in this area, and being nosey I pushed open the door leading into this yard. The six foot wall had disappeared, and was now a half inch thick layer of compacted brickdust on the back wall of the school. Where the doctor's house had been was a large shallow hole. A small piece of staircase and two vertical plumbing pipes were all that remained of the house, and three air-raid wardens were scratching about looking for any remains of the doctor, his wife and the housekeeper who I was later told had been sheltering under the stairs. I was told very forcefully to return through the door I had pushed open. The windows in the end of the schoolblock had all lost their glass, but the glass chemical jars and bottles in the lab "prep-room" which they served were all intact. Having a very visual kind of memory, I can still see that FW190 coming for my window!
