P47 Thunderbolt flying past at a recent Boxted Airfeild Fly-in

After the Marauders left the base switched to fighters and P51 Mustangs and P47 Thunderbolts were stationed at Boxted. They flew many sorties out to meet up with the heavy bombers bound for deep in Germany, to provide escort duty.

In the winter/spring before D-Day the area around High Woods (now a housing estate with big Tescos store!) played host to an American Signal Regiment. My older brother John delivered newspapers to them and we got friendly with some of them, including. Sergeant Lee who even came to share Christmas with us.
