I am now 74 but I can well remember the day war broke out. I was 8 years old and, together with my mother and other relatives, we were enjoying a lovely holiday at beautiful Camber Sands in Sussex where we had rented a converted bus as a holiday home. There was a gorgeous sandy beach and massive sand dunes where we kids used to play the usual childhood games.

Of course, the adults were all talking about the possibility of war and I remember my cousin George, who was in the T.A., hoping it would start soon so that we could get it over with quickly, "teach Jerry a lesson" and return to normal life. There was an announcement on the radio ordering the Terriers to report immediately for duty and George left Camber that day.

"Over soon" indeed! I didn't see him again for 7 years!
