The night my Mother, sister and I were bombed out of our house in Eltham SE9 in 1944, I will always remember walking along Westhorne Avenue outside our house on our way to a neighbour鈥檚 son鈥檚 house about half a mile away. When I looked down at my Mother鈥檚 feet I was rather shocked to see her silk stockings rolled down to her ankles!

We were all in our nightclothes, they were sent to her by our Dad who was serving on minesweepers in the Navy. My sister and I felt rather proud the next morning, going off to school with string tying the bottom of our plaits. Little heroes, we thought!
