My ex husband's mother and grandmother ran a boarding house on the North Shore (I think 216) and they had soldiers billeted on them. They also owned land in the Fylde area so could grow food and supply eggs, bacon, etc. There were often extras for breakfast as the food was good. When there was a food inspection, they hid the ham under a coat in the wardrobe and grandad flushed a load if sugar down the loo blocking it!

One day there was a mine alert and the whole prom had to be evacuated, but grandad refused to move and stayed asleep in the front parlour later waking up covered in glass where it had exploded.
