Alexander was a small brown Scorpion. He relived boredom and tension and made my father a bit of money during the war in desert.
Dad was a medic. He kept extensive diaries all his life. Being a medic - his writing is abominable and most of what is written in his diaries is liable to remain a mystery.
I remember being told about Alexander though, so when I found some sketches in a book I managed to decipher some of the scrawl beside them as Alexander figured in the writing.
Base camp was boring. There were flies everywhere. Facilities were basic in the extreme.
Scorpions were kept as pets. Hot plates were placed under the sand and the scorpions were put on them to fight. Bets were laid. Alexander was a winner.
Dad wrote sadly about his eventual demise. Alexander did not die fighting - or suffer injury from a hot tin plate. An ammunition box fell on him. As a betting man Dad's hopes were crushed.
His medical comments about war were written up like reports.
The death of Alexander was a lot more emotional.
