I joined the RAF at the age of 18 years, Initially I was stationed in Norfolk as a ground gunner, havine been strafed so often by German aircraft I decided I would like to get my own back so remustered as a pilot. After various courses at Lords cricket ground, Scarborough, Harrogate and Heaton park Manchester I eventually embarked for Canada via New York, I travelled in convoy with other ships containing Italian prisoners of war and children going for a new lif in the Americas.Having learnt to fly In Alberta on stearmans then harvards I gained my wings, returning home on the ss Andes, as this was a bigger and faster ship we returned solo.I now trained in the UK on tiger moths, oxfords, wellingtons and eventually joined an operational squadron. I did a tour of duty on the squadron, including D day and Arnhem, plus a number of trips dropping supplies to the maquis in France, between times I assisted the glider pilots by towing their gliders. Having left the squadron I returned to the conversion unit as an instructor on stirlings. Having finished my stint as an instructor I was due to return for a second tour, bu the war ended at that stage,I was then demobbed after 6 years in the forces.
