I was a child during the war and was brought up in Nairn in northern Scotland.
Every night lying in my bed I can recall about midnight the 'Admiral Lord Jellicoe' - a steam train thundering through the town on its way south.
I believe that this was a forces train -steam of course- that ran every night from Thurso to London.Naval personnell joined the train at Thurso from Scapa Flow and then at Invergordon. After Inverness the train went by Nairn to Forres where soldiers and airmen joined before the train turned south to Aviemore - nothing more in those days but a village and train junction-before heading south again to Perth and the English border. Many hundreds of thousands of servicemen must have travelled on this train.
This is only a bit of information but I have never heard of anyone else that can recall the trains existence.
