I remember when a timber ship containing oranges ran aground off Sheringham, not only did everyone go orange bobbing in the sea, but because of the size of the timbers washed ashore there was a definite proliferation of sturdy garden sheds in and around the town shortly afterwards.
My Mother used to make a vegetable pie that my family still cook today. It was about
a foot in length and cooked in an enamel tin in the oven. The recipe then is as follows:
Vegetables home grown from the allotment, root vegetables, green vegetables and potatoes all par boiled and then put into the dish, made up with stock with a couple of teaspoons of Bovril and covered with a pastry crust before being baked. These days we add some grated cheese to give a fuller flavour.
I am a true Shannock. To be a true Shannock, it means you have been born in Sheringham, your parents were born in Sheringham and your Grandparents were Sheringham born and bred.
My wife Pat has recently had a visitor from Norfolk, Virginia as part of 鈥淣orfolk and Norwich鈥 twinning. When we visited Norfolk in Virginia at the NATO base we saw the US battleship 鈥淲inston Churchill鈥 commissioned.
I also recall it was possible to get quite 鈥渕erry鈥 on cough sweets, they were covered in so much sugar that no one tended to notice the effects of too much me medication!
