Though born in post war London Angela Parker has been closely involved with the Royal British Legion (Bedford branch) as Poppy Appeal coordinator and was prompted to write this poem and many others about the everyday hardships, heartache and sometimes humour of civilian life in wartime.
Your daddy's still fighting in the war son,
Else e'd be 'ere today
No, he ain't sent no card
Not nuffin, else I'd say
Cos 'e might not know that 'e exists
Its nearly four years since 'e's been gorn
But I keep on writing letters so
I hope 'e knows 'e's born
Oh! Your aunt Flo's been bombed out
So she's moving in today
And Alf's put new blackies on yer boots
Now you ccan go out to play.
There's no icing on yer cake son
The sponge used all the sugar up
But there's three great big blue candles
And some lemonade that you can sup.
And when yer daddy does come home
When we've won this naughty war,
'e'll come proudly marching down the street
And you can meet him at the door!
Oh! Then we'll 'ave a knees up,
Jellies, ice cream, everyfing
Waving flags and dancing
And singing "God save the King!"
I've got lots of photos, your first curl and more,
The're over there in the sideboard drawer,
And you can show 'im our little man of three
When yer daddy comes 'ome....to you and me
