When I first left school, I worked for th Minister of Supply (Leather Control) as a shorthand typist, sometimes ( twice a week), I did firematching overnight on the roof of the telephone house in St. Loyes' street, Bedford.
My brother was killed in 1940 while serving in the Royal Navy, which gave me the urge to serve. At the age of 17 I joined the Royal Observer Corps at Biddenham, Beds HQ No. 12 group at that time. I worked as a plotter, of aircraft. During the war, in my spare time, I was a hostess in the US forces in Bedford at the Red Cross Club which was over the top, of what is now the Progress Restaurant in Rirer Street ( then Langhuist and Skinners). I remember dancers at the Corn Exchange with Glenn Miller conducting.
