I was 18 or 19 when I started work at the Swynmerton munitions factory on the first day it opened.A bus used to take us from Burslem to Swynerton every day. My job was filling the bullets with cordite.
The bus was Rowbottoms(?) from Mow Cop. We had to go up a hill in Newcastle. We called the bus a tatter roster-it was a bit past it's best-we had to get out half way up the hill and push the bus!
We were shot at on the bus one day as we got near Swynerton. There was no shift work- we did long days and nights. We had to wear overalls, white lace-ups shoes,hats-you weren't allowed any hair clips. The white shoes had to be kept clean-if you accidently trod in soil you had to get a new pair!
